Presenter: Kevin Yanushefski

91% of industry pros believe their events are effective—the tough part? Proving it.

One of the biggest challenges facing event industry professionals is that meetings, conferences, and trade shows don’t get the respect they deserve outside of the planning and production team.  Event organizers intuitively understand the importance of events, but often struggle to articulate that value to executive stakeholders.  With increased scrutiny on budgets and spend, many planners face the challenge of growing, or even just preserving, their event budgets year over year.

In response, savvy event pros are discovering how to tell their stories of event success in ways that stakeholders simply can’t ignore.  Are you ready to make your case to your leadership? By embracing event technology, and utilizing the increased availability of data, you can capture the metrics that matter most, and prove the impact of your events throughout the organization.

The ABCs of Event ROI webinar will help you:

  • Uncover the disconnect between event teams and executive teams
  • Discover tactics to close the gap and find common ground
  • Simplify and demystify the concepts driving Event ROI
  • Take actionable steps to start proving your event effectiveness

Connectivity for Meetings and Events

In today’s connected world, it’s hard to imagine a time when access to the internet wasn’t within the palm of everyone’s hands. Whether using a meeting app, taking notes, texting, emailing or posting to social media, connectivity is a vital part of everyday life – and every meeting. Because of this, online access is now an expectation rather than a perk. While this makes organizing and executing events a more efficient process, protecting valuable information stored on personal devices now must be a high priority for planners.

Poachers use pilfered attendee lists to pick off unsuspecting registrants from official blocks. Pirates will do the same. At best, they’ll book victims into subpar venues – and at worst providing no accommodations, and absconding with deposits.

Is the hotel Wi-Fi network in your room and meeting space secure? Are your registration and computer lab devices protected? Creating a cyber-safe environment is crucial, not only because of attendees’ expectations, but also because every phone, tablet and laptop is an entry point for potential harm to planners, delegates and their events.

No matter what you call them, these practices are all a version of consumer fraud. In this session we review the results of the CIC APEX Standards Committee CMP survey on Piracy/Poaching on who is affected, how they are affected, and what they are doing about this growing problem.

– Share data & tips from the CIC APEX Whitepaper & tool kit on Piracy/Poaching

– Discuss the various ways cyber threats occur and share what to do to protect your meeting.

Asian MICE & Travel Industry To Thrive In 2016

The burgeoning MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conference, Exhibitions) has been growing steadily over the past few couple of years. Despite the fact that Europe and the United States are still the major MICE markets worldwide, the Asia Pacific markets have seen rapid growth. According to the ICCA statistics report in 2014, there were over 2,400 meetings held in Asia Pacific & Middle East, which occupied 20% of worldwide meetings.

Holding more than 140 meetings in 2014, Singapore ranked the top in terms of the number of meetings per city and is regarded as the biggest MICE market in Southeast Asia. It will continue to increase the level of resources for the industry in order to grow its MICE industry in 2016.

The Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau recently announced “MICE 2020””, a blueprint for the country’s MICE industry evolution. The major themes of the project include: transforming Singapore into a “connected city””, defining an authentic, local and experience-driven meetings approach and establishing the country as the definitive MICE headquarters of Asia.

Other Southeast Asian countries are vying to knock Singapore off the top spot with their own similar efforts. Thailand MICE industry recorded over 580,000 travellers and generated around $14 million in the first three quarters of fiscal year of 2015. Bangkok’s IMPACT exhibition centre has revealed a mega project aimed at MICE professionals. $3.5 million baht is to be spent to enhance their facilities including adding a theme park along the shore of the lake

Following the growth of the Asian MICE industry and the success of the MICE Asia Pacific Exhibition 2015, Oliver Kinross is proud to present MICE Asia Pacific Exhibition 2016 –on 21 & 22 September 2016, Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. Asia Pacifc MICE Awards 2016 Ceremony and networking evening will also take place after day one of the exhibition and will feature live entertainment acts, cocktail party and networking. Only 4 weeks left until nomination for the Awards close. Education in the MICE Industry

The MICE industry also referred to as the Meetings Industry is a mighty and vital business sector which produces millions of jobs, generates billions in revenue and contributes to economic growth. The Meetings Mean Business Coalition stated that “According to a recent study by PwC, the meetings industry contributed more than $280 billion to the national economy and put another $88 billion back into the economy through federal, state and local taxes in 2012.”

Education, continuing training and networking is key to professional growth within the MICE industry. Dr. Erinn Tucker, Assistant Professor in the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) at Temple University teaches a newly designed MICE course and has taught various MICE related courses in hospitality programs in the US and internationally including protocol, risk management and meeting planning. STHM has the award winning Event Leadership Executive Certificate program designed for working professionals to gain continuing education.

Dr. Tucker worked in the industry for 10 years before transitioning into academia. Her best advice for those beginning and continuing their journey in the MICE industry is to treat the industry as the business it is. The ability to use events to achieve the business objectives is crucial to being successful in this industry.

Generally people think of meetings as less exciting and not fulfilling in the realm of creative. By the contrary, the meeting professional must produce any and all events for the organization so they have to know everything about the corporation, association or agency, in addition to the audience.

There was a time where event pros were viewed as support staff, now they are a part of the strategic planning and delivery of the organizations objectives. They have to work with executives, public relations, legal, and have a clear measurement of ROI. Therefore, the event pro’s oral, written and appearance must communicate professionalism.

In this post we cover three ways to receive and further education, training, and knowledge in the MICE industry. First up are Programs and Coursework in the MICE industry. Second is MICE continuing education and last is training and education at industry events.

MICE.com for Suppliers: MICE.com the Year-Round 24/7 Trade Show

The IAEE 2014 Future Trends | Impacting the Exhibitions and Events Industry authored by Francis J. Friedman states:

“The exhibitions and events industry has recognized its current structure is “episodic” in that a show or event takes place at one short time period in the year (assuming an annual show), and it must move to a year-round communications platform with its current audience and to attract new audiences. The industry also is awakening to the fact that continuing “content” is needed in order to move to a year-round communication program.”
