Asian MICE & Travel Industry To Thrive In 2016

The burgeoning MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conference, Exhibitions) has been growing steadily over the past few couple of years. Despite the fact that Europe and the United States are still the major MICE markets worldwide, the Asia Pacific markets have seen rapid growth. According to the ICCA statistics report in 2014, there were over 2,400 meetings held in Asia Pacific & Middle East, which occupied 20% of worldwide meetings.

Holding more than 140 meetings in 2014, Singapore ranked the top in terms of the number of meetings per city and is regarded as the biggest MICE market in Southeast Asia. It will continue to increase the level of resources for the industry in order to grow its MICE industry in 2016.

The Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau recently announced “MICE 2020””, a blueprint for the country’s MICE industry evolution. The major themes of the project include: transforming Singapore into a “connected city””, defining an authentic, local and experience-driven meetings approach and establishing the country as the definitive MICE headquarters of Asia.

Other Southeast Asian countries are vying to knock Singapore off the top spot with their own similar efforts. Thailand MICE industry recorded over 580,000 travellers and generated around $14 million in the first three quarters of fiscal year of 2015. Bangkok’s IMPACT exhibition centre has revealed a mega project aimed at MICE professionals. $3.5 million baht is to be spent to enhance their facilities including adding a theme park along the shore of the lake

MICE 101

What is the definition of MICE?

MICE” also known as the Meetings Industry stands for: Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. Sometimes the “C” and “E” can refer to Conventions and Events.

IAPCO (the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers) publishes a book called “Meetings Industry Terminology” which functions as a dictionary for the meetings industry. These are the definitions as put out by IAPCO:

Meeting – general term indicating the coming together of a number of people in one place, to confer or carry out a particular activity. Frequency: can be on an ad hoc basis or according to a set pattern, as for instance annual general meetings, committee meetings, etc.

Incentive – meeting event as part of a programme which is offered to its participants to reward a previous performance.

Conference – participatory meeting designed for discussion, fact-finding, problem solving and consultation. As compared with a congress, a conference is normally smaller in scale and more select in character – features which tend to facilitate the exchange of information. The term “conference” carries no special connotation as to frequency. Though not inherently limited in time, conferences are usually of limited duration with specific objectives.
